MX systems can be configured with power levels from 1000 Watts to 5000 Watts with 120vac output. Larger systems are available with up to 20KW at 120Vac output, 40KW at 240Vac bi-phase, or 60KW at 208Vac 3 phase. Eliminating control and alarm cards can create systems lower in cost, but are not redundant. One 1000 Watt master module and any number of additional 1000 Watt power modules (up to 19), combine to make a standard inverter. This type of system can be expanded as power requirements increase. |
| System |
The Exeltech MX Series of inverters is a highly modular system of products which can be assembled in many combinations to afford the user infinite flexibility.
In order to have a fully functional MX inverter, you must have the follow three things:
Control Signal Source (either a Master Module or at least one Control Card) Inverter Module (either a Master Module which functions as both a signal generator and inverter module or at least one control card) Cage Enclosure (provides connections to battery and AC outputs) The building blocks of the system are as follows:
- Power Module - this is a 1000 Watt slave power inverter. It requires drive signals from a Master Module or Control Card as described below. This module is the backbone of the inverter system and will be the majority of the modules inmost systems.
- Master Module - This is a 1000 Watt power inverter which contains all the electronics necessary to operate. It requires an enclosure to provide connections to the battery and AC output. This module can also operate up to 19 slave Power Modules as listed above. If this module is used to operate the slave modules the system cannot be fully redundant.
- Control Card - This card will generate all the signals necessary to operate up to 20 Power Modules. The card itself will not generate any AC output power nor does any power flow through it. This card can be paralleled with another Control Card to generate a redundant set of control signals to form the basis of a completely redundant inverter system.
- Alarm Card - This card can be used in conjunction with a redundant or non redundant inverter to provide various alarm output signals to the user via LED's and alarm contact closures. It must be included in redundant systems to detect failure of control card.
- Transfer Switch - Provides all the same functions as the alarm card, plus provides a relay to transfer AC power to the load from either the inverter of the utility input. Use only with system 7KW or less.
- Cage Assembly - Required on all MX Series Inverters, the cage provides connections to the battery and provides AC output.

| Transfer Switch |
EXELTECH'S modular transfer switch can be added to 23", 19", 9", and 7" cages (configuration 2A, 1A, 9C, or 7C--See SYSTEM DESIGN CHART) The transfer switch allows the inverter to automatically switch between inverter power and a secondary source of AC power. The transfer switch has a maximum capacity of 50Amps and a typical transfer time of 4ms. The primary power is selectable via a front toggle switch. (i.e. you can select whether you want to run off the inverter and switch to utility when there is a problem or run off utility and switch to inverter if there is a problem.)
TRANSFER CONDITIONS
The transfer module will switch between its primary source when the voltage of that source drops below 105Vac or above 135Vac. The transfer module will transfer back to the primary source when the voltage of that source goes above 110Vac or below 135Vac.
LED ALARMS
The transfer module contains LED indicators that monitor DC Voltage, Module Fail, Temperature, Load, Utility, Utility Source, Inverter Source, Inverter, and Primary select reverse.
CONTACT CLOSURES (REMOTE ALARMS)
The transfer module contains "form-C" contact closures to monitor inverter status remotely. These remote alarms include: Minor Failure, Major Failure, Inverter fail, Source fail, DC fail, and Utility fail. |
| Alarm Card |
The Exeltech Alarm card is necessary in a redundant system. It allows an MX Series inverter to detect a control card failure and switch to the backup control card.
Exeltech's alarm card provides both LED alarms and "form-C" contact closures for remote alarming.
The Exeltech alarm card provides LED indicators for DC On, inverter on, load presence, inverter fail, breaker open, high temperature, and low voltage.
The Exeltech alarm card provides "form-C" contact closures for minor failure, major failure, inverter failure, bypass, DC failure, and AC failure. |
| Control Card |
The Exeltech control card provides all the control functions for the power modules. Adding a second control card provides redundant operation as only one Control card is required to operate the system. In the event the primary control card fails, transfer to the secondary control card is automatic. Control cards can be "removed" or "inserted" without disruption of the unit provided there is always one control card installed at all times. A RESET switch is provided to "reset" the control card if tripped accidentally. The control card in slot 1 (leftmost slot) must be active for the system to be redundant.
NOTE: a control card and a master module cannot be used in the same inverter. |
| Master Module |
A master module combines the control signals of a control card with a power module. This is a space saving solution when redundancy is not necessary. The master module provides control signals to up to 19 power modules.
NOTE: A master module cannot be used in the same system as a control card. In addition, there can be only ONE master module in use in a single phase inverter.
The master module supplies up to 1000Watts of continuous 120 Vac power. Its output and input characteristics are identical to that of a power module.
NOTE: The Exeltech master module is not "hot swappable" due to the fact that it contains the control signals for the entire inverter. |
| Power Module |
| The power module fills a key role in the expansion of Exeltech's MX Series inverters. This is a 1000Watt slave power inverter. It requires drive signals from a Master Module or Control Card. This module is the backbone of the inverter system and will be the majority of the modules in most systems. |
| Cages |
MX Series cages come in a wide variety of sizes. Once an MX Series cage has been fully populated, additional power may be obtained by "stacking" MX cages together (up to 20Kilowatts per phase!). Installations can either be free standing or in standard relay racks.
- 23" cage assembly - This enclosure is compatible with a 23" relay rack.
- 19" cage assembly - This enclosure is compatible with a 19" relay rack. This is the smallest cage which can contain a redundant system.
- 9" cage assembly - for 1-3KW systems when redundancy is not required.
- 7" cage assembly - for 1 or 2KW systems when redundancy is not required.
